Nancy Jane Spencer
July 18, 1943 – August 12, 2016
Nancy Jane Spencer was born July 18, 1943 to Eugene and Sophronia (Davis) Thurman in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. She departed this life August 12, 2016 at the age of 73 years and 25 days.
A 1961 graduate of Bristow High School, Nancy studied at the Oklahoma School of Business in Tulsa as well as Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. On September 7, 1962, Nancy Thurman and Edgar Spencer were united in marriage, enjoying over 53 years together. To this union were born two children, Lori and Michael.
Nancy made a career in the business industry, working in Tulsa and then in Bristow. She worked for many years at Bristow High School as the Principal’s secretary. She left the school to start Candy Creations, a new business that has become very successful. Nancy has always been involved in the community. She has been in charge of the Bristow Merchants Association, working with the Tabouleh Festival and Santa Bucks; and was a member of the BPW, Alumni Association and volunteered as an usher at the Freeland Center. In 2013, Nancy received the well-deserved Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award. Trips to Branson or to Southern Gospel Concerts were some favorite pastimes; as well as the monthly Performing Arts Center theatre trips with the girls and going to Book Club. Church was an extremely important part of Nancy’s life. She could be found in attendance most anytime the doors were opened. Through the years she had worked as a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir, went on mission trips and worked with activities surrounding the children and youth. Whether it was giving someone a ride to church or fixing food for a church member, Nancy was always available to help anyone in need. Most of all, she loved her family, especially her grandkids and would do anything for them.
