5.0 Earthquake Hits Cushing Hard

The quake we all felt this weekend may have been startling, but for Cushing residents the ‘aftershocks’ are challenging. The ground and buildings shook violently and caused significant damage – roofs collapsing, tumbling bricks and stones, and some minor injuries from falling objects and falls.

The quake measured 5.0 and was reportedly centered 1.2 miles west of Cushing, Oklahoma.

The story here from Jonathon Miller, KOKH Fox25 News:

CUSHING, Okla. (KOKH) – The United States Geological Survey reported a 5.3-magnitude earthquake centered a mile west of Cushing, Oklahoma. It has since been downgraded to a 5.0-magnitude quake.

The temblor was reported at 7:44 p.m. Sunday, with the epicenter about 1.2 miles west of Cushing.

The Oklahoma Geological Survey reported the initial quake as being a 4.6 magnitude. It has since reported at least five aftershocks ranging from 2.0 to 3.0 in magnitude.

Only minor injuries have been reported, according to Assistant City Manager Jeremy Frazier.

During a media briefing on Sunday, Cushing Police Chief Tully Folden reported an area between Moses and Cheery streets, and from Noble to Seay avenues has been locked down. Folden asked people to stay out of the area, because of the danger of aftershocks.

Cushing officials say a number of buildings were damaged. No buildings collapsed, Cushing City Manager Steve Spears said, but a number of them had sustained damage to their facades, as well as a number of broken windows. Minor damage was reported to Cushing City Hall. READ MORE
